18 Seconds to Enlightenment

Picture 34

It takes 18 seconds to change a light bulb, so how many has your state changed? Inconvient Truth Producer Lawrence Bender has launched a new campaign hosted by Yahoo and supported by NGOs and well known brands such as WalMart. Check out the new badge on the right nav bar (down a bit). With this tool, states and cities can compete to see how many pounds of coal and dollars they have saved, cars that they collectively kept off the road and pounds of CO2 they have prevented from entering our atmosphere by replacing incandescent bulbs with compact florescent lamps (cfl’s). When you purchase a cfl anywhere in the US it will be added to www.18seconds.org! The pure competition should appeal to environmentalists and adreneline junkies alike. I’m embarassed to say that my state is in 36th place, so please California PLEASE get your lights together.

While switching out incandescent bulbs may save energy, there is a drawback for some of us. Many people with Lupus and other illnesses have a severe reaction to florescent lighting. Migraine headaches, blurred vision or worse – exposure may generate a ‘flare’. Sunlight can also be at fault. A flare for an individual with Lupus can be debilitating. I wish there was someway that individuals would be encouraged to use florescents, but not mandate there use.
