Be My Eco-Valentine: Top Cards for Your Love

The national day of love is right around the corner. When planning the ways you’ll profess your feelings (whether for a partner, parent or friend), make sure you’re also taking Mother E into consideration. Here’s a round-up of Valentine’s Day cards that beat true red, while holding steadfast to our stringent green criteria – but be forewarned, they’re not all mushy-gushy on the inside!

What a Steel

With the ever present scares over BPA-laden products, it’s left parents in a tizzy trying to figure out which products are safe for little ones. One things for certain, steering clear of plastics and opting for food-grade stainless steel bottles will ensure that nothing nasty gets leached into beverages. Pura Kiki bottles are our latest fab find – in bright colors (using non-toxic paint, free of lead, phthalates, PVC and BPA) with a silicone nipple top, these modern feeders will keep baby happy and healthy. Poetic Embellishment

Imagine the perfect dinner party, to which you would invite Dostoyevski, Emily Frost, Tom Waits, and Mozart – now imagine what on earth you would wear. Blank Verse designers Jane Farrar and Laamie Young did just that, and then brought the vision to life through draping vintage necklaces, glovlettes and cuffs made with leather scraps, flea market finds and vintage lace – each with their own story. Nesting Au Natural

Home design is a passion of ours, but how we cringe when we consider that deforestation may have contributed to the wood furniture peddled by mass retailers. Lucky for us, and for you, nesting au natural does not mean having to throw your ethics or aesthetics out the window. We’ve already written about the vanguards behind environment, whose Los Angeles outpost is a regular ecofab stop when we’re in the City of Angels. In nearby Santa Monica, another green-friendly showroom is proving that design can, and should, have a conscience. (more…)

The Art of Dumpster Diving

Cast aside any previous notions you had about digging through the trash. The Recology SF (San Francisco’s re-branded waste management system) Artist in Residence program is revolutionizing the way this city’s inhabitants view their castaways. By providing local artists with work space, a monthly stipend, and unlimited access to materials (namely in the form of recycled goods and found items at “the dump”), this innovative program is offering inspiration and education to the community. Head Over Heels

While we may hover somewhere closer to “serious obsession” on the shoe fetish spectrum, we think you’d be hard pressed to find a fashionable gal that wouldn’t swoon at first sighting for the Italian-made Tashkent by Cheyenne line. But there’s no guilt in these pleasures – the talented designer uses organic materials like cork, B1 (scrap or remnant) leather, and eco-friendly dying methods and vegetable-tanning (as opposed to the conventional toxic method of chromium).
